Delaware River City Corp Breaks Ground For New Trail

Visit the Delaware River City Corp Site

Former Congressman Bob Borski, Chair of the Delaware River City Corp., (center), along with (R to L) DRCC Board member Daniel McElhatton, DRCC Executive Director Sarah Thorp, Fairmount Park Director Mark Focht, DRCC Executive Secretary to the Board Mariann Porter Dempsey and DRCC Capital Program Director Paul Lonie cut the ribbon to allow construction to begin on the ½ mile extension of the trail at Pennypack on the Delaware Park.  The new trail section will be a passive trail past a tidal wetland to the mouth of the Pennypack Creek where it meets the Delaware River.  This is the first section to be built for the proposed 11 mile greenway on the Delaware River in Northeast Philadelphia from Pulaski Park, at its southern end at Allegheny Avenue to Glen Foerd on the Delaware, adjacent to the Poquessing Creek at the Delaware River at its northern terminus, where Philadelphia county meets the boundary of Bucks County.

All the talk surrounding what happens next along the Philadelphia waterfront points to these decisions being the biggest thing since the Liberty One debate.   As any city planner/architect can tell you, the placement of I-95, as a divider between the waterfront and the business/tourists areas, was one of the worst decisions ever.  But unless it can be altered, we have to live with it. The waterfront must be developed with an eye to the future, and we can only hope that the planners will see the purpose of an earth-friendly cover over that portion of 95, with easy access to and from Center City, Old City and Penn’s Landing. Here, on Phillyneighbors, we will give ample space and time to this area, a diamond in the rough that has been overlooked for far too long.
